Summer is in full effect and although it seems like hot weather can totally work against us, there are many ways to make it work in your favor when it comes to fuel economy! We have put together a quick list that will not only help you to beat the heat but save a little at the pump as well.
For starters, your engine will warm up to an efficient temp a lot faster. With your engine being warm, every time it takes in oxygen, it requires less, which in turn uses less fuel. This is why the reverse is true during the cold and bitter winter months. Since this is already a given, let’s talk about what can you do to save even more fuel. Not sure where to begin, no problem. Ford is here to help! Use these quick tips for fuel-efficient driving.
MAINTAIN & CARE FOR YOUR CAR:
- Get Your Vehicle Serviced. A tired and overworked engine uses more fuel and emits more emissions
- Use the Right Oil Type. Oil is thinner during warmer temperatures. As a rule of thumb, it is always best to use the grade of oil that is recommended in your owner's manual.
- Keep Your Tires Inflated. Do not allow the air to go below 50% of the recommended level. Also keep in mind that there is increased pressure inside the tires, where air cannot escape.
- Keep Your Air Filter Clean. Clogged filters can reduce gas mileage and acceleration time since air conditioning is the top fuel guzzling accessory.
ADJUST YOUR LIFESTYLE:
- Combine Trips and Errands. Avoid "stop and go" traffic and save time and fuel expenses. You can even choose to walk to local areas, such as the store. It is good for your health and saves gas and the environment.
- Avoid Driving Aggressively. Fuel consumption increases by 40% when you push the gas abruptly or brake suddenly. Try to accelerate smoothly and brake slowly. No need to be a lead foot!
- Tighten That Gas Cap. Believe it or not, gas has a higher energy content during the summer months so it burns more efficiently. Since this is the case, why not save as much of it as possible? Make sure the cap is tight (generally second notch tick). Don't allow any of your gas to evaporate!
- Use the Right Fuel. Check your owner's manual to see which fuel type is most efficient with your car model.
- Drive Steadily and Avoid Idling. Try to drive at or below the speeding limit at a steady pace. This can improve your gas mileage instead of wasting much needed fuel.
- Use the Air Ventilator Instead of Running the Air Conditioning. The more accessories you run, the harder your alternator has to work. They have to gain power from somewhere, right? If you can’t bear it, roll those windows down and try running the air conditioner only when you are on the highway.
There are plenty of things you can do to improve your fuel efficiency, but this is a good start! Remember that the summer heat can be harsh on your car. Small changes in your driving lifestyle can expand the lifespan of your car, save you money and contribute to a greener environment. If you have a need for service or repair, you could be costing yourself extra money so don't put it off.
