With 2017 just around the corner, many of us will be traveling to see friends and family to bring in the new year. The holidays can be busy driving season, so the service team at McDavid Ford has provided a few tips for you so that you can be prepared for your trip:
- First, you want to make sure to inspect your tires, have your oil changed, and stock up on extra coolant before taking a long drive. A simple walk-around check of your vehicle can help alleviate potential issues along the road. If you want to take it a step further, a service appointment couldn't hurt. You can winterize your vehicle or come in and get "The Works" from McDavid Ford or a related service prior to departure. Although Roadside Assistance is always a great alternative, who really wants to be stuck on the side of the road during the holidays. Either way, you still want to have those contact numbers handy along with a car charger just in case.
- For unexpected emergencies, it is always helpful to have a roadside kit in your vehicle with you. It should include items such as a flashlight, jumper cables, a blanket, flares, fix-a-flat, toolbox, first aid kit and anything else you might find useful in an emergency situation. With new cell phone and car technology, we have gotten used to using digital GPS options, but it can still be beneficial to keep an old fashioned paper map on-hand. Also, pack some snacks and bottled water. If you are brave enough to travel through ice or snow, kitty litter is a helpful option to tire chains if you get stuck on a patch of ice. If these don't work, you can utilize your car's floor mats to put under the tire, which will give you just enough traction to get out of a slippery spot.
- Prior to leaving, be sure you check the weather of your destination. It is important to make sure you are aware of conditions which can include everything from rain and storms to ice or snow. These will not only slow you down but you are more likely to have an accident or stall during these weather types. If it’s going to be really bad, you will have enough time to consider taking an alternative route.
- For ultimate safety, you should be making smart driving decisions by staying within the speed limit and avoiding any distractions such as texting. All passengers should fasten their seatbelts properly and remain seated for the duration of the trip.
With a little extra preparation, you can have a stress-free road-trip and ring in the new year with family and friends. Happy Holidays and see you in 2017!!
